Aug. 27, 2023 - Norske Skog announced that it has restarted a previously idled paper machine (PM5) at its Saugbrugs paper mill in Halden, Norway. Prior to being idled in late 2020, PM5 had a production capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes per year of SC magazine paper.

The restart of PM5 allows Norske Skog to continue supplying SC magazine paper to its customers and keep its market position after a rockslide on April 27 from a hill outside of the mill damaged the building's structure, cranes, and other machinery and equipment relating to another paper machine at the mill, PM6, which was shut down that day.

PM6 has the capacity to produce of 260,000 tonnes per year of SC magazine paper.

"The decision to restart production at PM5 is important to maintain Saugbrugs as a preferred supplier of SC paper in Europe, while the restoration work is ongoing at the PM6 plant," said Per Ivar Berg, Managing Director at Norske Skog Saugbrugs.

A third paper machine at the mill, PM4, which is in another building on the site and was not affected by the rockslide, continues to operate. PM4 has the capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes per year of SC magazine paper.

Norske Skog is a world leading producer of publication paper with strong market positions and customer relations in Europe and Australasia. The Norske Skog Group operates four mills in Europe, two of which will produce recycled packaging paper following ongoing conversion projects. In addition, the Group operates one paper mill in Australia.
